Caser's age limit for health insurance & other important details

September 19, 2024

One of those factors that you may not think to consider when researching and contracting a plan is the age limit for health insurance coverage – both the minimum and maximum age. In the U.S., for example, Medicare is primarily available to individuals aged 65 and younger, provided that they do not have certain disabilities or medical conditions – and those 26 and under can benefit from their parents’ current plan. But when moving abroad, how do you determine whether or not your age will qualify for medical insurance plans?

In the case of an individual, some countries and the insurers that operate within them do not impose a maximum age limit for individual health insurance plans, although the premiums can increase significantly with age; if the policy holder is older, they might find there are exclusions or higher premiums for pre-existing conditions. As a rule of thumb in Spain, it is typical to have an age limit for health insurance, typically between 65 and 75 years depending on factors such as the insurer and the policy.

In the case of family health insurance plans, children can be typically covered under their parents' health insurance plan until they reach a certain age. One of the parents should add a newborn to a family’s existing health insurance plan  by communicating their birth within the first 15 days.

The primary policyholder (usually a parent) can continue coverage regardless of age, but older adults will likely face higher premiums.

If you will be employed while in Spain for a Spanish company, you will qualify for public health insurance via the social security scheme with no upper age limit. The retirement age for most sectors in Spain is 65. That said, you must have contributed to social security for at least 38 years to continue qualifying for medical care. If you do not meet this requirement, you can either continue to work, or you can take out a private healthcare policy.

Always remember to carefully check the specific terms and conditions of your Caser health insurance policy or consult with a trusted insurance broker to understand any age limit for health insurance as well as all benefits.

Is there an age limit for benefits on the whole?

Yes, as is standard across developed countries. Depending on the policy you choose, this maximum is between 64 and 69 years of age; if you are in this age bracket, Caser suggest that you consult the age restrictions that are specified in each of their health insurance plans.

What about Caser’s medical insurance policies and an age maximum?

Many families and adults choose Caser’s Médica Plan for its outstanding benefits that cover the whole family: you have access to more than 13,000 specialists who accept your insurance plus Telehealth and selfie health options, reimbursements for dental and prescriptions as well the peace of mind with coverage for anything that can arise

The maximum age at which you could take out a plan with Médica is 69 at the time of contract.

The Caser Activa  plan is the best option for young adults who are relatively healthy. If you don’t plan to go to the doctor often, this plan includes co-pays for any services or doctor visits rendered for a low monthly cost. You’ll also get access to Caser’s specialists, Telehealth and selfie health options, reimbursements for dental and prescriptions as well the peace of mind with coverage for anything that can arise. As far as coverage limits, the potential policy taker shall not be older than 65 at the time of contract.

Do remember that many procedures will be covered from Day 1, such as primary medicine, home doctor visits or online doctor consultations and more.

What to keep in mind about Caser’s health insurance plans when contracting

  • You must be at least 18 years of age to be a policy holder on your health insurance plan. You must also be a resident of Spain or applying for visa residency.

  • There is no limit to the number of people on your policy, so long as they are direct members of your family and registered under the policy. Any minors on your policy must have a legal, binding relationship with at least one of the policyholders.

  • Health insurance plans renew annually for all family members; if you wish to notify Caser regarding any changes, you must do so in writing at least 30 days prior to your renewal date; failure to do so will result in your agreeing to another year of coverage.

  • Your first step is to research plans; from there, you can fill out the mandatory health questionnaire for everyone who will be included on your policy and get a personalized quote in less than a minute.

Other frequently asked questions about age limit for health insurance in Spain

Is there an age limit for health insurance for visa purposes?

Retiring in Spain is gaining traction these days, between the high life expectancy and low cost of living for expats. One of the most important elements of your visa application is to take out an insurance plan with a Spanish company, and there is usually an upper limit in age.

Caser offers the Adapta health plan for those hoping to become insured with Case and procure the documentation necessary for a visa. This plan offers the required medical and hospitalization coverage necessary with no co-payments in addition to required repatriation. And you can access services right away with no wait periods. You can qualify for this plan so long as you are under the age of 65.

To qualify for Caser Expat Insurance plans, you must have a número de identificación del extranjero (TIE numer). You can also add your children to a family plan, as they will also need health insurance.

Can I get travel insurance with health coverage in Spain?

Travel insurance policies often have age limits, typically ranging from 70 to 85 years, depending on the insurer.

Are there any further restrictions for coverage? What about the period de carencia?

In some cases, pre-existing illnesses and conditions could restrict the scope of your protection.

When reading the insurance policy plan, you may also notice something called a periodo de carencia. This waiting period is typical in all private insurance policies across Spain and means that some of the medical or surgical coverages within your policy – and in particular, the costliest procedures – will be subject to a waiting period prior to going into effect. For example, if you discover you are pregnant and wish to take out health insurance for your routine exams, delivery and post-natal care, your policy coverage would not start for nine months; waiting periods vary, depending on the procedure.

So, what does this mean? Simply put, consider taking out medical insurance before an illness or issue arises. If you are family planning, procure your insurance in advance and consider taking out special maternal coverage for maximum care and comfort.
